ABOUT THE SITE

The field study will be conducted in Old Town, Salvanpet and neighbouring areas of Vellore, in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. This is an area with a low-income population that has been provided healthcare services by the Christian Medical College, Vellore for several years. Vellore city has a population of approximately 400,000 in urban and peri-urban areas and is 140 km from Chennai, the state capital, on the Chennai Bangalore highway. There are two medical colleges, one engineering university and several other colleges in this city. The Christian Medical College (CMC) is a 108 year old institution which has a 2200 bedded, referral, multispecialty teaching hospital in Vellore and three satellite secondary care hospitals at Bagayam, Kavanur and Vellore town, serving rural and urban poor populations from defined catchment areas. Geodatabases have been established for the Kaniyambadi block (population of 100,000) and the Kaspa urban area (population of 40,000). The study team for the Mal-ED project will work with the population covered by the Low Cost Effective Care Unit, with the data management at the Community Health Training Center (CHTC)
