ABOUT THE SITE

The site is located in a remote, rural region of Tanzania.  The government’s Demographic Health Survey indicates that rates of malnutrition in the region are high (HAZ <-2z 40%, WAZ <-2z 31%).  Haydom Lutheran Hospital conducts a rigorous Reproductive Child Health System as part of routine preventive care for the region, including 38 outreach clinics across 74 villages, 295,581 individuals, 8164 new mothers, and 8378 new children (2007 data).  This RCHS data indicated that the clinics in the villages had relatively high rates of underweight (9% weighed <80% of expected in 2007). Many individuals walk long distances to reach the RCHS clinics from surrounding areas. Our study will be focused on the villages to the south of Haydom: Endhargadat, Mewadan, Getarer and Getanyamba which form a loop. Every household in this region of Tanzania is led by a Balozi, or community leader. The study of mothers and children in these four villages will involve the Balozis and households along the driving route
