ABOUT THE SITE
The study community is located in the Mirpur neighborhood of Dhaka, Bangladesh. The population is largely Muslim, with men employed for non-agricultural work in a variety of paid jobs and businesses while the women mainly work in the homes. The community suffers high rates of diarrheal and respiratory illnesses and enteric infection despite recent improvements in sanitation. Enteric pathogens of relevance to Mirpur are Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) (9%), Aeromonas (9%), Giardia (11%), E. histolytica (8%), Cryptosporidium (8%), and Rotavirus (10%).
The International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B) is an international health research organization. It is located in Dhaka and was established in 1978. It is recognized as one of the premier institutions in the world in the study of diarrheal diseases. The Centre is credited with demonstrating the effectiveness of oral rehydration therapy for the treatment of cholera and other dehydrating diarrheal illnesses. It has also been one of the most frequently used sites for clinical trials of new vaccines against diarrheal diseases.
The MAL-ED household census in Bangladesh has enumerated 5794 households in the study area. Close to 400 children with malnutrition (WAZ <-2) have been identified for the study as well as approximately 300 case control children (WAZ >-1). Bangladesh, along with Fortaleza, Brazil are the two MAL-ED sites that will be conducting both cohort and case control studies.
