The Unidade de Pesquisas Clinicas & Instituto de Biomedicina/ Center for Global Health (UPC & IBIMED / CGH) is located on the Health Campus at the School of Medicine, Federal University of Ceará. This new facility provides five research laboratories each with the capacity for PCR, ELISA, and microscopy. Since 1978, the UPC & IBIMED/CGH have maintained a program of international collaborative research and technology with the CGH at UVa. This program has trained over 60 faculty, fellows and students from both institutions, focusing on field, clinical and laboratory research on enteric infections, HIV/AIDS, malnutrition, leishmaniasis, and more recently tuberculosis and human genetics applied to these diseases. The UPC & IBIMED / CGH also engage in collaborative research with the Hospital Infantil Albert Sabin (HIAS). The HIAS is the major state hospital for the city of Fortaleza and a reference hospital for the Ceará state. The hospital has 330 beds and approximately 80% of attending children are from the city of Fortaleza. The hospital attends to approximately 23,000 children per month, approximately 1,150 emergency cases per week including over 20 cases of severe diarrhea per week. The UPC & IBIMED / CGH also collaborate with the 135-bed Hospital São José.
